A CHOICE OF TWO FUTURES FOR WALES

Choice of two futures facing Wales is ‘stark’ Plaid Cymru warn

‘One week left to change Wales for good’ – Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth

The choice between the two futures facing Wales a week today “could not be starker”, Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has said.

He was speaking ahead of a Plaid Cymru campaign event in Pontypridd to mark a week to go until the Senedd election on 7th May.

Plaid Cymru is currently neck and neck in the polls with Reform UK with Labour a distant third.

Mr ap Iorwerth said only Plaid Cymru offered “hope”, a “clear vision” and a “credible plan” to put Wales “nation on a new path towards fairness and prosperity”.

He appealed to anyone who ‘believed in Wales’, ‘values the NHS’, and wants to keep the country “free from Trumpian politics” to back Plaid Cymru.

The Plaid Cymru leader added that if elected First Minister he would always work to find “common ground” with others who value decency, credibility, and compassion and would fight any injustice facing Wales.

Speaking ahead of the campaign event in Pontypridd, Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said,

“We have one week left to change Wales for good.

“Labour have had their day. The sun is setting on twenty-seven years of missed opportunities and managed decline.

“And the spectre of Reform is causing anxiety and unease among communities already wrangling with those rising totals at the supermarket till and the petrol pump.

A party ruled from London and backed by billionaires and those seeking to profit, marred by the same-old malaise of chaos, self-interest, and scandal.

“Only Plaid Cymru offers new hope to Wales. Only Plaid Cymru has a clear vision and a credible plan to put our nation on a new path towards fairness and prosperity.

“A detailed plan to cut waiting times. The most generous childcare offer in the UK. A strategy to grow the economy and create jobs through National Development Agency.

A Numeracy and Literacy Plan to give every child the best start in life.

“And, for the first time, a commitment from the Welsh Government to challenge Westminster every step of the way on HS2, justice, energy and the Crown Estate.

“The choice between the two futures facing Wales a week today could not be starker.  It is a straight fight between Plaid Cymru and Reform.

“So, if you believe in Wales, if you care about our communities, if you value our NHS and want to keep our country free from Trumpian politics, there is only one option.

“Whether you’re a life-long member or a first-time Plaid Cymru voter, my promise to you is simple. As your First Minister, if there is common ground to be found with others who value decency, credibility, and compassion, I will seek it out.

“If there is an injustice facing Wales, I will fight it with every fibre of my being.

“And if there is an opportunity to make our nation a fairer, more prosperous, more tolerant place for everyone who lives here, I will seize it.

Plaid Cymru launches manifesto to unlock Wales’ economic potential and deliver a ‘fairer, more ambitious future’

Plaid Cymru has launched its manifesto for the Senedd election, setting out a bold plan to unlock Wales’s economic potential and build a more prosperous, confident nation.

Alongside its immediate priorities, the party has set out a wider programme for economic renewal, including:

·       Creating well-paid jobs with a new plan to support Welsh businesses, reviving town centres by reforming business rates, use public procurement to invest in the future, and make sure skills and training match real jobs.

·       Supporting families with the cost of living with £30,000-worth of free childcare for children aged 9 months to 4 years, with parents being able to get into work and giving every child the best start in life.

·       Raising literacy and numeracy standards in schools by introducing a new Literacy and Numeracy Plan, supporting teachers, and giving every primary school a library by 2030, giving young people the skills they need to succeed.

·       Standing up for Wales to get a fair deal from Westminster to invest in infrastructure – including fair funding and further powers

·       The devolution of the Crown Estate to keep profits in Wales and invest in the long term through a new Wales Wealth Fund supporting community energy and community ownership, affordable and energy-efficient housing, and essential national infrastructure

Speaking after the manifesto launch, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said:

“The election on 7 May will be the most important since the dawn of devolution.

“It is an election which offers real hope for the future of Wales. That hope is represented by Plaid Cymru - tangible action from day one to tackle the immediate challenges facing our country, a longer-term vision for renewal, and a promise to always stand up for Wales.

“That opportunity for change stands in stark contrast to Labour’s record of managed decline, and their refusal to make a stand for the interests of our nation against Westminster’s indifference.

“And it is the key to stopping the threat of Reform, who offer no real solutions to the challenges we face, dealing instead in empty soundbites and fanning the flames of division.

“I am proud to present this Plaid Cymru manifesto, our plan for a modern, confident Wales – a Wales where all our people and communities can contribute to and share in our nation’s success.

“We will cut NHS waiting times, freeing up time, space and resources to build a sustainable and integrated health and care service for Wales – one that does more to keep people well, rather than just treating illness.

“We’ll support families and give every child the best possible start through a transformational new free childcare offer for all children aged 9 months to 4 yars old.

”We will unlock our untapped economic potential – building on our strengths to create well-paid and secure jobs and spread prosperity to every part of Wales.

“And with a new, bold and determined drive on numeracy and literacy skills, we will raise the bar on standards in our schools, so every child in Wales is set on the path to success.

“Together, and for the first time, we can give our nation the leadership it needs and deserves.

“Leadership that takes its cue from the people of Wales and nobody else.

“Leadership that believes when we choose hope over division and seriousness over chaos, Wales can - Wales will - prosper.

A MATTER OF CHOICE

Labour's mismanagement of the NHS has left 1 in 5 people in Wales on a waiting list.

People living in pain or discomfort.

But Reform don't have the answers when it comes to our NHS! Their boss, Farage, wants to move to an insurance-based system...

A Plaid Cymru government will create surgical hubs across Wales to get people treated faster and cut waiting lists, easing the pressure on the health service.

Vote Plaid Cymru on Thursday 7th May 2026 to renew our NHS.

SUPPORTING OUR SMALL BUSINESSES

Plaid is set to utilise business rates multiplier to tip the scales in favour of smaller businesses.

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has criticised the support offered to Welsh hospitality businesses by the Labour Welsh Government.

From April, every pub in England will get 15% off its new business rates bill, and bills will then be frozen in real terms for a further two years.

The support offered by the Labour Welsh Government is only for the 2026/27 financial year, a period of time that does not provide the sector with the same level of longer-term certainty, according to Plaid Cymru.

Plaid Cymru called on the Labour Welsh Government to go further by utilising the business rates multiplier to support smaller businesses and designing a tax system that is ‘on the side of SMEs’.

Plaid Cymru leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS, said:

“Whilst welcoming today's announcement - as called for by Plaid Cymru in recent days, this is only a short term solution that gives little long term assurance to a sector worth £4bn to the Welsh economy that cannot survive on a one-year settlement basis alone.

“In Wales, it’s clear that Labour has no long term plan - something that is essential for the viability of the hospitality industry.

“It’s clear that the business rates system in Wales is fundamentally broken and that the hospitality sector is facing an existential crisis. Which is why a pro-business Plaid Cymru government would prioritise the radical reform needed.

“A Plaid Cymru Government would utilise the business rates multiplier to tip the scales in favour of smaller businesses by designing a tax system that is firmly on the side of SMEs.

“Plaid Cymru is serious about giving Wales’ economy the fresh start it needs with real plans to support those businesses that need it the most.”

PLAID SURGES AHEAD IN THE POLLS

An explosive new poll has just been published by ITV/You Gov... which has Plaid Cymru is surging ahead in ITV Cymru Wales’ latest opinion poll on 37% with on 23% and Labour in fourth place on 10%.

This election is very much a two-horse race between Plaid Cymru and Reform with more and more people are realising they face a choice between two very different futures, and are choosing to back Plaid Cymru’s positive vision for Wales

Plaid Cymru are the only party that will always stand up for Wales, with new leadership and serious plans to fix our NHS and help people with the cost-of-living crisis. Reform is focused on chasing headlines and getting Nigel Farage closer to Number 10 - not on Wales’s future.

PLAID CYMRU SECURES £300M FOR COUNCILS AND THE NHS

‘We acted to protect services and council tax bills, and to create a more sustainable position for a new government – Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth MS

Plaid Cymru have secured £300m for councils and the NHS in Labour’s rollover budget.

Plaid Cymru had previously warned that Labour’s draft budget would deal a serious blow to Wales’ public services - pushing councils towards thousands of job losses, forcing steep rises in council tax, and leaving the NHS with a historically low funding uplift.

Local Authorities and the NHS will now receive substantially more funding because of Plaid Cymru’s intervention with local authorities set to receive an average uplift of 4.5% with all councils receiving increases above 4%, compared to Labour’s original 2.2%, and the NHS will see a 3.6% uplift compared to 2.1% previously.

Plaid Cymru will not vote for the budget but will abstain to allow it to pass.

Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said that by allowing the budget to pass in return for the necessary increases in health and council budgets, Plaid Cymru ensured that Labour’s ‘catastrophic’ proposed cuts were avoided.

While this remained Labour’s budget to own, Mr ap Iorwerth said without Plaid Cymru stepping in, the next Welsh Government after May’s Senedd election would inherit far weaker foundations and that his party had “acted to protect services now” and to “create a more sustainable position for a new government”.

Mr ap Iorwerth said his party was ready to lead the Welsh Government after May with the ‘new leadership’ required to turn things around.

Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said,

“Plaid Cymru always acts in the best interests of Wales and that is exactly what we are doing on the budget.

“Labour’s draft budget would have led to sky-high council tax, unprecedented job losses in our public sector, and a historically low settlement for the NHS. Plaid Cymru will simply not allow this to happen.

“We asked for two things - to protect public services and prevent unaffordable council tax rises, and to correct the inadequate NHS settlement caused by Labour’s rollover budget. We have secured both.

“By abstaining in return for the necessary increases in health and council budgets, Plaid Cymru ensures that Labour’s catastrophic proposed cuts are avoided.

“Councils and the NHS will now receive substantially more funding because of Plaid Cymru’s intervention. Local authorities will receive an average uplift of 4.5% with all councils receiving increases above 4%, compared to Labour’s original 2.2%, and the NHS will see a 3.6% uplift compared to 2.1% previously.

“This remains Labour’s budget to own but without Plaid Cymru stepping in, the next Welsh Government would inherit far weaker foundations. We acted to protect services and council tax bills and to provide a more sustainable position for a new government.

“If Plaid Cymru can achieve this in opposition, imagine what we can deliver with the opportunity to lead the next Welsh Government in May - real change and new leadership that puts the people of Wales first."

The Leader of Ynys Mon County Council and Plaid Cymru Group Leader on the WLGA, Gary Pritchard said,

“This is a welcome intervention and we’re grateful that Plaid Cymru has stepped in where Labour did not. The additional support won’t remove every pressure, but it prevents a disastrous outcome for our communities and gives councils the breathing space we urgently need.

“For years, councils have been forced to do more with less, and the point has come where that approach simply isn’t sustainable.

“What is needed now is long-term planning, fair funding, and leadership that works with us, not against us. Today’s announcement is a step in the right direction, and we look ahead to May as a real opportunity for new leadership and a fresh, constructive partnership for the future."

EDITOR’S NOTES / NODIADAU I’R GOLYGYDD:

The final vote on the Welsh Government budget for 2026-27 is expected in January 2026.  Plaid Cymru will abstain.

The Welsh Local Government Association had previously warned recently “social care, homelessness, education and workforce costs continue to rise faster than resources can keep up.”

The draft local government settlement was published two weeks ago. The auditor general, Adrian Crompton, said councils face a "real squeeze" as costs spiral for children's care and other services.

Following Plaid Cymru’s by-election win in Caerphilly, Labour no longer holds a majority in the Senedd. This means it cannot pass its budget without the support of other parties or two additional votes.  A failure to pass the budget would mean the budget will pass at 75% of this year's level which could have a catastrophic effect on public services, with cuts and potentially major job losses.
