AFTER THE LORD MAYOR’S SHOW

Well there we are then, the Newport East Westminster election is over and the voters (those who actually turned out to vote that is) have spoken. It was an interesting Westminster election campaign in a new if oddly put together constituency with portions added from the old Newport West constituency and portions lost to the new Monmouthshire constituency. There should be another massive thank you to my wife, my agent, my campaign team members and the electors of Newport East for their support.

Weather-wise it was a strange campaign as well with possibilities of torrential rain and bright sunshine (although admittedly with some heat) - sometimes all within the same hour. Any election, and this one was no different, should give every candidate the opportunity to listen to, to talk to and to meet with many Constituents, during the course of what should become a prolonged walking tour in my opinion of one of Cymru / Wales's more interesting constituencies.

Elections are not simply about the voters and the candidates, a whole host of people work very hard behind the scenes to make things work smoothly, including the Returning Officer(s) their staff, the council staff who run the polling booths and the staff who count the votes and the other  council staff and the Police who work tirelessly to make the count function flawlessly.

Post election, in Newport East (and elsewhere) former candidates and even for the successfully elected candidate life can now begin the process of returning to some form of normality. For the next few weeks after returning to normal sleep patterns and a normal intake of coffee may be something of a priority, that and resisting the strange desire to knock on the doors of perfect strangers and push leaflets through complete strangers letter boxes.

Now that the sound and the fury have faded, and the door knocking and on the street conversations have blended into one, former candidates can sensibly take stock and perhaps some reflection. As a candidate, no matter the result, you should neither make instant decisions about your future nor say anything in the heat of the moment that can come back and haunt you further down the line.

There is little glory in politics, save in victory, merely hard often unappreciated effort, any dreams of political immortality / longevity should be regularly doused with hard cold realism.

I learned that lesson a few election campaigns ago, having featured on the front page of a local newspaper in relation to the well supported local campaign to Keep Abergavenny Livestock Market I had the quite bizarre experience of going to buy some chips in a local chip shop with a friend only to sit-in the queue to observe myself literally being wrapped around chips as has been said elsewhere Sic transit gloria mundi - or "Thus passes the glory of the world”.

A STRONG VOICE FOR WALES

We need a strong voice to speak truth to power for Wales.

The Conservatives have regularly stated that for every £1 spent on public services in England Wales gets £1.20

Yet the HM Treasury - Country and Regional Analysis of public spending - which was published on December 20th 2023 reveals that the spend per head

London £14, 486

Scotland £14,456

N Ireland £14.453

Wales £13,387

With the Tories are fading fast  - we cannot afford to but let London focused Labour take Wales for granted.

With a new (and indifferent to Wales) Labour government in Westminster - just how much will Wales matter? Who will speak for Wales?

Let's elect a strong group of Plaid Cymru MPs that will be our voice in Westminster and will always put Wales’ best interests first.

A vote for Plaid Cymru & Jonathan Thomas Clark is a vote to give Newport and Wales a strong voice in Westminster on Thursday 4th July 2024.

THREE DAYS TO GO

More Plaid Cymru MPs means Wales won’t be ignored by incoming Labour government

With the Tories on their way out and Labour offers little or next to nothing to Wales.

Only Plaid Cymru offers a proper alternative to the two tired old London parties who have ignored our communities needs for generations.

Monday will mark the last of three full days of campaigning until polling day before people cast their votes.

Some of Plaid Cymru’s main pledges include demanding £4 billion owed to Wales from HS2, a fair funding deal, and powers over natural resources to invest in the nation’s economy.

Plaid Cymru is the only party fighting for fairness for Wales.

Vote Plaid on Thursday 4th July 2024

TWO WEEKS TO GO

We have two weeks to go and the postal votes are being delivered

We know the Tories are on their way out, and rightly so, but with Labour likely to be in government after 4th July, we can't let them take Wales for granted.

We need Fair funding for Wales

  • Secure the £4 billion owed to Wales from HS2 to invest in improving our own public transport in all parts of the country and reversing cuts to local bus services.
  • Demand a fair funding system for Wales, based around our needs, giving us the public services we deserve.

We need Fair play for patients

  • Fair funding from Westminster, enabling us to invest in our NHS workforce and recruit 500 GPs into Wales after years of Tory cuts and Labour mismanagement in Cardiff.
  • A new Cancer Strategy to ensure cancers are caught and treated earlier, and ending Wales’s postcode lottery for treatment.

We need Fairness for families and communities

  • Help 330,000 Welsh families to deal with the cost of living crisis by increasing Child Benefit by £20 per week. This will take 60,000 children out of poverty in Wales.
  • Redressing economic unfairness; increasing windfall taxes and devolving the Crown Estate in order to create green jobs and build prosperity.

Wales needs a strong Plaid Cymru voice in Westminster to demand fairness for Wales

If you've got your postal vote already, please consider voting Plaid Cymru. Otherwise, vote Plaid Cymru in two weeks time on 4th July 2024

Jonathan T Clark for Newport East

Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales, has confirmed Jonathan T Clark as its candidate for the Newport East constituency for the forthcoming Westminster General Election.

Jonathan T Clark said:

"I am pleased to have been selected to contest the new Newport East constituency at the next Westminster General election. For far too long the people of Newport East have suffered from the fact that the Westminster parliament has long failed to consider the economic and social needs of the people of this constituency. “

He said:

“The people of Newport East need an MP who will actually put the real concerns of the electors of Newport to the forefront rather than simply pursing party interests. Wales needs more Plaid MPs in Westminster to work to deliver for the people of Newport and the people of Wales. The only way to get a government that will always put the interests of Newport at the heart of government in Westminster is return more Plaid MP’s".

Jonathan continued:

“ I will be Newport East’s voice in Westminster rather than Westminster’s voice in Newport East. A vote for Plaid Cymru on 4th July is a vote for fairness, ambition and a strong local voice that will put Newport East and Wales' best interests forward in Westminster."

Jonathan concluded:

“I aim to bring that combination of curiosity, stubbornness, tenacity and a real desire to seek the truth combined the skills acquired working as a journalist, in public relations for the police, in public sector education and recruitment. I have the ability to seek the truth and an understanding as to where it can be concealed which would be useful while working as Newport East’s representative in Westminster.”

Liz Saville Roberts MP, Plaid Cymru Leader in Westminster, said:

“I’m delighted that Jonathan has been selected as the candidate for Newport East in this desperately needed general election. Jonathan’s commitment to the people of Newport has been clear. I know that if Jonathan was to join the Plaid Cymru team in Westminster, he would be a hard-working champion for Newport East and for Wales.

“We are in a time of change, but Labour does not mean change for people in Newport East. There is a real need for challenging voices like Jonathan’s in Westminster, standing up for his community and asking ‘What does this mean for Newport East?’ So on the 4th July, please vote for Jonathan T Clark and for Plaid Cymru.”

Plaid Cymru Leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS, said:

“Jonathan would be a fantastic MP for Newport East. I’ve no doubt he would be a strong, local champion for Newport East in Westminster. In all parts of Wales, we can do things differently in this election. We can kick the Tories out. We can put the interests of our communities in all parts of Wales first.

“At the same time we can tell Labour that we won’t let them take Wales for granted. In Plaid Cymru, we stand apart from UK establishment politics. We don’t want the future to look like the past. We want people to feel hope about politics once again. A vote for Plaid Cymru is a vote for fairness, for ambition, and for Wales.”

FRIARS WALK AND DEBENHAMS

The loss of Debenhams in Friars Walk is a bitter blow - while covid has not helped matters very much - the Debenham’s retail model was failing for some years. The priority has to be for former workers need as much help as can be given to find nw jobs and training. The Friar’s walk development itself was too small and failed to create the retail space for local businesses to set up from the start. While there have been some tentative steps towards that in recent weeks, at a fundamental level that has to change from now on - there has to be a blend of local businesses and the usual suspects - there is room enough to make this work. One basic economic fact is that if you spend ten pounds in local business it will circulate three times longer locally in the local economy that ten pounds spent in a chain outlet. Newport has suffered because of the obsession with directly competing with Cardiff and Cribs Causeway. We need to focus on growing small local businesses that supply our needs as well as hosting the usual suspects to bring economic life back to our city centre. If we can do this then we can bring sustainable economic growth and life back to our city centre.

6 reasons to vote Daniel Llewellyn in Newport East

Daniel Llewellyn’s six pledges to the people of Newport East:

We need affordable homes prioritised for local residents, We need to end street homelessness and we need to develop a sustainable protected green belt for Newport and Wales.

Wales’s lacks, a serious well thought out integrated housing structure plan, a modern planning system and a realistic vision or plan for strategically developing our housing for the future. I will fight to help establish protected green belt land around our urban areas.

Newport must be at the forefront of the green energy revolution - with our deepwater port, our highly skilled adaptable workforce, we are a natural centre for offshore wind, tidal lagoons, tidal turbines and an Usk river barrage

We need a public transport revolution for Newport, the metro must deliver and quickly - saving our environment, our time and money.  We need new stations at Somerton, Llanwern and Magor and we need them urgently.

Newport has suffered because of the obsession with directly competing with Cardiff and Cribs Causeway. We need to focus on growing small local businesses that supply our needs as well as hosting the usual suspects to bring economic life back to our city centre.

The proposed Cardiff City region and the Western Gateway project will not serve Newport well. I will ensure that Newport has a strong voice in the Senedd, I will work hard to put the interests of Newport, rather than party interests, first.

PLAID CYMRU SAYS ‘GET ON WITH IT’

Plaid Cymru in Newport has condemned the pointless empty gesture from the Conservatives in Newport in relation to their efforts to have a referendum on the already rejected M4 Relief road - saying we need action to relieve the congestion that affects our city not empty words , waffle or pointless gestures.

Plaid Cymru broadly welcomes the report of the South East Wales Transport Commission which recommends ways to reduce congestion on the M4 motorway without building a new relief road around Newport.  Plaid Cymru welcomes to call for more investment in public transport, a much better integration and coordination of rail and bus networks and integrated tickets across all services - and we need it now rather than later.

Jonathan T Clark, Plaid Cymru Newport West Senedd candidate said:

“We need practical action, not the pointless empty politics of gesture. We need ground broken to bring the new railway stations that will serve Newport into being, and provide alternative means of getting around our city, and we need it sooner rather than later.”

He said:

“Plaid Cymru welcomes the proposed railway station at Tredegar Park it’s an absolute necessity, but we have serious concerns that no railway station to serve Caerleon / Ponthir has been included, this would a real asset to both communities.”

Jonathan added:

“Its absence could be interpreted to show a lack of understanding of local transport issues, to literal a linear a focus on the problems of the M4 or a simply a glaring oversight in this case ensuring that the residents of Caerleon / Ponthir have little choice but to drive to Newport, Cwmbran and beyond even to reach another railway station.”

Jonathan concluded:

“The lack of a proposed railway station to serve the communities of Caerleon / Ponthir needs to be revisited as a matter of urgency if the commission and the Labour in Wales government are serious about providing decent integrated public transport for all parts of Newport and cutting congestion on the M4.”

Daniel Llewellyn, Plaid Cymru Newport East Senedd candidate, said:

“Plaid Cymru in Newport warmly welcomes the recommendations to create Newport East station in Somerton, as well as long overdue plans new stations at Llanwern and Magor.”

He added:

“From the perspective of Newport East, the proposed railway stations at Llanwern and Magor are an absolute necessity and with a more frequent affordable rail service.”

Daniel concluded:

“A new M48 junction connecting Severn Tunnel Junction to the east would sensibly provide direct bus access and would ease the pressure of car traffic on M4 junction 23A and the roads through Magor. In addition, adding additional bus bays outside Newport Central station would help to build connectivity.”

Plaid Cymru in Newport and Monmouthshire has long called for the existing railway stations to be significantly upgraded as part of the process of creating a functioning South Wales metro.

DANIEL LLEWELLYN NEWPORT EAST

Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales, has confirmed Daniel Llewellyn as its candidate for the Newport East constituency for the forthcoming Senedd Elections.

Daniel Llewellyn said:

"I am very pleased to have been selected to contest Newport East constituency at the Senedd Elections in May 2021. For far too long the people of Newport East have suffered from the fact that Labour in Wales in Cardiff Bay, has long failed to consider the economic and social needs of the people of this constituency.“

He said:

“The people of Newport East need an MS who will actually put the real concerns of the electors of Newport to the forefront rather than party interests. Wales needs more Plaid MS’s in the Senedd to work to deliver for the people of Newport and the people of Wales. The only way to get a government that will always put the interests of Newport at the heart of government in Wales is to vote Plaid Cymru at the next Senedd Elections".

Daniel continued:

‘I have never seen any benefits for Newport being a simple dormitory town for Bristol or Cardiff. I have never bought into the Severnside agenda, no matter how many times it’s relaunched. On the coastal belt and in and around Newport and Torfaen (not to mention around Cardiff and Caerphilly) and across Monmouthshire the last thirty years we have seen a significant if not spectacular growth in the amount of housing, a significant percentage of which has never been aimed to fulfil local housing needs.’

Daniel concluded:

“We have had twenty-one years plus of Labour misrule, Labour are part of the problem. As a community councillor (since 2019) in Bedwas, I feel that politics should start within the community. I have seen first-hand how our communities have been left behind by both Cardiff and Westminster. I want to be that change that we all need.  I want to take that chance to make a difference to people lives and I will bring to Newport East my passion, my drive and my commitment to make things better.”

Adam Price MS, Plaid Cymru Leader, said:

"We have a superb candidate in Daniel Llewellyn, in Newport East, who is committed in changing the lives of the people of the constituency for the better – getting to grips with the housing crisis, creating well paid jobs to tackle the unemployment crisis and putting the needs of people of Newport front and centre. The choice facing people in May is simple - further decline under Labour, fewer powers with the Tories, or an ambitious Plaid Cymru government that will set Wales on a path to a fairer, more prosperous future with independence.”

Delyth JewelL, Plaid Cymru Candidate South Wales East Regional List, said:

"Daniel's enthusiasm for change is infectious.  As a councillor and community champion, Daniel has proven himself to be a determined advocate for the people he represents.  He is unafraid of speaking truth to power, and he would show the same determination as a Member of the Senedd.  I hope the people of Newport will show him their support to be their representative in our parliament, where I know he would always fight for the community."

Peredur Owen Griffiths, Plaid Cymru Candidate South Wales East Regional List, said:

I have known Daniel for a number of years and he never fails to impress me with his passion, enthusiasm and commitment to every task he turns himself to. He will not rest while there is a problem that needs fixing or an injustice that needs addressing. He will work tirelessly for the people of Newport East carrying your voice to the Senedd and standing up for Wales.

PLAID’S PLEDGES TO NEWPORT

We want to see a Wales with a better sustainable democratic future – its time to change Newport and change Wales.

Newport must directly benefit from the green energy revolution, with its deep water port and highly skilled and experienced workers - our city should be at the forefront of the development of off-shore wind, tidal lagoons, tidal turbines and a revisited Usk river barrage.

Newport needs decent affordable public transport. A well-planned Metro is the only realistic option, which will save our environment, our time, and our money.

We need a new railway station at Caerleon and revived direct hourly rail service from Ebbw Vale via Rogerstone into Newport.

We need new railway stations at Llanwern and Magor and better local rail services to Cardiff and Bristol.

Wales needs major investment in environmentally sustainable affordable homes and to bring in rent relief for people who pay more than 30% of their income on rent.

We must reverse the tide on rough sleeping in our city, not by punishing the vulnerable as Labour and the Tories wish to continue to do, but by providing safe, accessible, and supportive services for everyone who need them.

Plaid aims to create a Welsh justice system, devolve policing and create a new crime prevention fund to recruit 1600 extra police officers, that being at least 2 for every community in Wales, to keep us safer.

We face a double problem, a Labour dominated national assembly that’s bereft of ambition, ideas and the tools to do the job. We also have an increasingly dysfunctional Westminster that is simply not interested in Wales and Newport.

If it is not us, then it’s no one - Wales it’s us!
