TEST! TEST! TEST!

5,000 tests a day by mid-April. That was the Welsh Government’s promise.

Tomorrow, we will reach the middle of the month with nobody expecting the government to achieve that aim. It is an absolute scandal that they have failed so spectacularly to increase testing to the levels we need.

Over the last few days, instead of approaching 5,000 tests per day, Wales has seen fewer than 1,000 daily tests.

Yesterday, without any logical explanation from the government, the new testing centre in Cardiff was closed for the bank holiday. Today, Vaughan Gething, the Health Minister seemed to blame Wales’ lack of testing on Local Authorities.

Two major problems with the Welsh Government’s response are abundantly clear:

1 Following the collapsed deal between the government and Roche, they have failed to increase capacity to the level needed

2 The government has totally failed to ensure that the tests they already have are being used – with an unbelievable amount of key workers having to go without tests despite those tests being available.

The WHO’s message is clear: Test. Test. Test.

Sadly, the Welsh Government’s response has been to Fail. Fail. Fail.

Plaid Cymru is continuing to challenge the government for the answers to why we are so far behind countries across Europe when it comes to testing.
